Girls can be engineers too! Goldie Blox review.

The perception of what girls are capable of is changing.

Us women , we can change the world and we will. We have the responsibility to future generations to raise empowered, confident young women who are not afraid to stand their grounds and are capable of anything.

My daughter will change the world. How do I know that? Because she is amazing and she can do whenever she wants if she put her mind and efforts to it.

She will achieve anything she dreams of , and we will make sure to support her in any ventures she imagines.

Last week her brother and her got in a bit of an argument, the subject was “engineering”.

My 5 year old stood her ground strong, she demanded apologies from her older sibling and a written confirmation that in fact GIRLS can be engineers too!

This natural exchange of very passionate words from my children sparked a discussion which we all participated in. Discussions became a very important part of our homeschooling journey.  It enables my children to express their point of view, sometimes we don’t agree with each other but its a part of the journey of self acceptance and confidence building.

Well anyway, this post was going to be about something I cam across a while ago. I was debating buying it but thought it was a bit pricey. Anyway I ended up ordering one of the sets of Goldie Blox on Amazon as it was on offer.  £8 down from £19. Bargain. And since then we have ordered all the remaining sets and they are worth every penny.

This is not a toy, this is a real thinking machine. The sets are adorable, they come with full instruction in a form of a booklet and little figures.  Each set has a different engineering concept. The first one we bought was the Hinge, simple concept but so fun to do!

We absolutely fell in love with Goldie Blox, the company has made great videos and apps for kids ( aimed at girls but my son is crazy about it)

The set is of great quality. Its not a cheap plastic , its a fantastic hardcore plastic which will last for a long time.

The instruction booklet tells you a story about Goldie and what she will build. The brilliant thing is that it gives you other ideas as what you can make out of this set.

In this set Goldie Blox builds a dunking machine for her Dog Nacho, the booklet takes you to a fun fair with rides and stalls. Its really fun!

The concept is simple and the instructions are easy to follow for children to work as independent as possible. This is a fantastic STEM activity, which encourages imagination, mistakes can be made and easily corrected with the right outcome.

My kids had an absolute blast with Goldie Blox.

Their Website is full of videos and helpful tips .

Plenty of Jelly fish in the Ocean. Underwater unit study

My kids has been nagging me to buy them a pet.  As much as they knew this wasn’t possible due to our frequent travels and the fact we have none we could give the pet to look after.

They begged for a gold fish or a hamster and as much as I wanted to buy them one I just couldn’t.

That week we decided to study underwater ocean life. Subject that is never ending due to wonders of the amazing aquatic life we are lucky to have on our planet.

Our amazing journey started with the amazing poster we received free from Open University. If you are in the UK then register with OU to receive this amazing Blue Planet poster

Its lovely and detailed.

We picked jelly fish as our creature to study in depth. What an amazing experience it was.

The kids absolutely loved it.

First task was to paint a jelly fish , the younger one choose to do a big jelly fish one the older one choose to do a tiny detailed jelly fish with his acrylic paints.  He became a fan of painting tiny miniature creatures which are absolutely adorable.

Next task was just amazing! We had “real” jelly fish to observe. It was really a plastic jelly fish but it looked so realistic!! We sat there memorised!

You must agree they look fantastic . It was a bit tricky to set up and I had followed the instruction but kept getting it wrong so I read some tips from other people and finally managed to get them swimming in life like motion.

Watch our video!!

The kids were happy as they now had their own jelly fish pet. A win win situation. Doesn’t need feeding and simply you can turn of the button!

We studied the look of the body and we discussed the way it moves. We also researched how they catch prey. BBC now streams the BLUE PLANET 2 on the player and we watched the episode called ” The DEEP” which was amazing !! Thanks BBC!

This unit study was one of the most interesting ones we have ever done. The children were very excited and they really engaged in the subject. Simple tasks and simple discussions covered the subject in depth and we had so much fun too!

X rays explained

I think my daughter will be a vet. She is the biggest animal lover there is, no matter what animal she love it, and wants to learn about it.  Our subject today was X-rays, after watching a You Tube video and trying to sort of explain to my very confused 5 year old who had no idea about what radiation is…

Finding a hands on activity was our best option. I managed to get my hand of the printable X ray set ( thanks Pinterest). You can find it here It was designed to work with a light box, guess what we had none, but guess again , we had a large window and lots of sun!

It was a lot of fun for my little one . She also gave me an idea and we laminated them so she can use them in her vet pretend play!

Below is some products we used in studying this unit.

If you click on it I will get a tiny cut to keep my coffee addiction going.

Trolls will always be trolls.

I have been trolled.

I didn’t think I could be trolled as I’m not famous nor my blog is followed by millions.

But I got trolled.

Someone told me I was looking to get rich because I signed up to Affiliate programme.

The same person told me my posts were too short and I should just stick to my daily job.

How did i feel? I felt bad. Mostly because I put a lot of thought in the blog posts and I recommend only products which we use and test ourselves. Its not get rich quick fix. I have signed up because what is wrong with being given a little gratitude for hard work put in.

My husband told me trolls would always be trolls. They want to see you fall and see you being defeated.

But why? Probably out of jealousy, insecurities and lack of real problems or overload of them. Who am I to judge.

Everyone has crap to deal with and I don’t see anything wrong with giving a helpful hand to a fellow mama/blogger. I buy through affiliate links because I appreciate the time and effort others put in.

So my dear troll. Thank you for making me stronger. Your comments has made me realise I can achieve much more then I gave myself credit for. I therefore salute you and I will toast in your name!
